Taking couple photos for Janelle and Trent at Sunrise Beach, or Playa Mirador, in Tulum, Mexico was so fun during our friends trip. It was the perfect getaway from the Michigan winter. I love Tulum more and more every time I visit. The green and lush jungle, bright sun, warm days and loads of things to do outside make it one of my favorite beach towns to visit.
After a week in Tulum filled with cenotes, scuba diving, delicious food, mezcal tastings and Mayan ruins on the beach, on our last day, we went to Sunrise Beach just after sunrise to soak in the sun during Trent and Janelle’s photo session. These two had recently gotten married in the summer at The Madison in downtown Detroit. So this was a fun way to celebrate their first few months married (and Trent’s first time to Mexico!)
The beach in Tulum is public, but much of the coastline is home to resorts, clubs and restaurants so accessing it can feel more difficult than it should at times.
That’s why I find Sunrise Beach, also called Playa Mirador, in Tulum perfect for engagement photos. The beach is super easy to access. Coming from downtown Tulum, you’ll take Avenida Coba all the way towards the beach. Turn right onto the beach road (you can’t miss it), pass through a few resorts and restaurants and very shortly, you’ll see sunrise beach. The beach becomes right along the road making it easy to spot with the rock formation usually covered with people walking and sitting on it.
In the morning, it’s typically fairly simple to park since it won’t be too crowded yet. You can park along the side of the road and you’ll be right on the beach. This is a popular spot during the day time and weekends, especially around sunset. But it’s appropriately named for its amazing location for sunrise. And if you go early, you’ll beat the beach-going crowds. In the evenings though, you’ll definitely want to bike or scooter down. While there are parking lots nearby, they fill up very quickly. And you can expect the beach to be crowded with people.
That Friday morning, with Janelle and Trent, we walked along the beach, explored the rock formations and at the end, they even got a little wet in the water. I shot the session mostly on digital with a sprinkle of black and white 35mm film.

Taking couple photos at Sunrise Beach in Tulum, Mexico with Janelle and Trent was the perfect excuse to see the beautiful Mexico sunrise. And of course, as a destination and midwest wedding photographer, I’m never happier than when I get to combine travel with photography, especially in a city I love.
