Hannah and Garret decided to return to The Sugar House, the bar they went to on their first date, for their engagement photos. They actually met through mutual friends. Garret would message friends asking about Hannah but he was too nervous to message her directly on instagram. On a night when Hannah was out with some girlfriends, her friend decided it was time the two finally connected. So, being a great wingwoman, she texted Garret from Hannah’s phone to “break the ice” and as they say, the rest is history.
Choosing Where to Do Engagement Photos
When we’re first planning an engagement session, I always like to ask couples what they love to do together and if they have any special spots they love to visit. If you’re trying to decide where to do your engagement photos, rather than thinking about locations from an aesthetics standpoint, think of the places you love visiting and the things you love doing together. From there, you can narrow in on locations that are sentimental to you while capturing the two of you in an environment or activity that makes sense for you two and your story. To get you going, here’s a list of some of my favorite metro Detroit locations for photos.
For Hannah and Garret, they love going out on the town, enjoying Detroit’s scene and events, and getting cocktails. And after learning they had their first date at Sugar House Detroit, it was a perfect spot for the session. The Fisher was a nice complement to the bar for a change of scenery and some variety, while being a Detroit landmark with iconic architecture.
We started their engagement session at the Fisher Building, the perfect backdrop to Hannah’s white dress and Garret’s blue suit. After spending about 35 minutes on the first floor of the building, we left for Sugar House.
The bar brought the moodier, evening bar vibes to change things up and Hannah and Garret switched into a more casual outfit. Sugar House was so kind to let us a few minutes before opening so we would have the space to ourselves as they ordered their cocktails. As far as unique spaces in Detroit that allow photography (without a fee!), Sugar House is always great.
I loved working with Hannah and Garret for their Sugar House engagement session. Like so many couples, they told me they were awkward and nervous about being in front of the camera but they did amazing. After a few minutes, the awkwardness starts to disappear and you’re just handing out with your favorite person and a friend. I can’t wait to capture their wedding day at The Henry Ford Museum later this fall. I already know it’s going to be a fun one!
