When I first met Kimberly and Joe and we spoke about their upcoming wedding, Kimberly already knew she wanted a colorful downtown Detroit spring engagement. While we both would have loved more flowers, they also needed to get the engagement session done in time to send out save the dates so brought in color through her dress, greenery and yellow tulips on Belle Isle and shooting during sunset.
After a drink at downtown’s “The Skip” bar, we started working our way throughout the nearby blocks of downtown Detroit. Kimberly and Joe wanted a mix of urban and nature so going from downtown to Belle Isle was the perfect and convenient location match. Detroit’s historic architecture and skyline is also something Kimberly loves since she’s an architecture.
We started in Parker’s Alley, behind the Shinola Hotel and then walked around Woodward Avenue before heading to the top of the Z Lot Parking Garage. From there, we went over to Sunset Point on Belle Isle, overlooking the downtown Detroit skyline, after a quick outfit change.
I wanted to hit Sunset Point both with the sun up and once it hit blue hour (the 20 minutes or so after the sun sets below the horizon, giving everything a blue/purple-ish cast). So we did somewhat of a small loop around Belle Isle, starting and finishing at Sunset Point. In between, we checked out the Belle Tower and the gardens in front of it along with nearby open fields.
Shooting with Kimberly and Joe was so fun and we lucked out with a beautiful sunny sky for their downtown Detroit spring engagement. If you’re planning your engagement session but not sure where to take photos, check my ultimate list of photo locations in metro Detroit.
