You might have seen us use the words “album design session” on social media and across this site so today, we’re diving into what exactly the album design session is. The album design session is when we’ll design your wedding album after the wedding day and once you’ve seen your photos! Every Emily Kyle Photography package includes a custom heirloom wedding album and an album design session. But first, let’s cover the basics.
Is a Wedding Album Worth It?
With the likes of social media, digital photo frames and more these days, you might be asking yourself, “Is a wedding album worth it?” Will you even look at it? What’s wrong with just digital pictures? The answer is a very loud and confident, YES! Your wedding photography is the one thing that will last beyond the wedding day and those special moments and memories deserve to be preserved in print, shared and enjoyed for years to come.

The Album Design Session
Over the years, and after designing dozens of albums, I’ve created a system of designing the wedding album that allows you to be fully involved and invested in the design process, but in a way that requires the least amount of effort on your part and ensures an efficient, email-back-and-forth-free process. Basically, there’s no chance that after the wedding, life will get back to busy and before you know it, a year will have passed by and you still haven’t finished your album.
The Album Design Process
- Schedule Your Album Design Session
When you schedule your wedding photo reveal, you’ll also schedule your album design session. By scheduling your album design session up front, before you’ve even seen your wedding photos, we can get your album in your hands in just a few months after the wedding.
- Finalize Your Album Design at the Album Design Session
The album design session is an in-person meeting where we’ll finalize your wedding album layout and you’ll choose your cover material and design. When we sit down together, I’ll present you with a first draft of your album pages that tells the complete story of your wedding, from getting ready all the way to the dance floor at your reception.
After you’ve gone through it a few times, we’ll start to make any changes you want, from swapping photos, adding or cutting spreads and pages and tweaking the layout. While I make those changes, you’ll get your hands dirty by looking through lots of material swatches, from velvet and linens to leathers in various colors and textures. You’ll choose your cover material and decide on what you want on the cover, whether it be a photo, the wedding date, names, or anything else. You can upgrade the size, cover material, add a storage box, sleeve and more.
The collaborative process of finalizing the album is fun! Many couples love having a true hand in the creation of the album, making it even more special down the road. As much as possible, I love doing these design sessions in-person. We can enjoy a coffee, lunch, cocktails or anything else in the process. But this can also be done over Zoom, if needed. While the whole process can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours, the idea is that when we leave that time together, you are done done done with your album.
- Enjoy Your First Family Heirloom
All you have to do after the album design session is wait for the heirloom to arrive at your door in about 3-5 weeks. No more emails, nothing. It’s off your to-do list! The rest is on me.
After the album design session, you can anticipate your album to arrive in 3 to 5 weeks, depending on the time of year, shipping speeds and your location. Most EKP couples have their wedding album within 3 months of the wedding date! From there on out, you’ll have your first family heirloom ready to cherish for years to come.
